Theodor Barr was born in Constance near the black sea and grew in Tel Aviv, Israel. Barr's first painting mentor was S. Zafrir, an old Israeli master, that taught him the foundations of drawing from 1995-2002. Theodor barr is a self made artist with broad education in the area of astronomy, literature and history. He wrote three books. His book Frau Gruber's Farm, published in 2006, is a thrilling allegory about German history. Barr also wrote Krombee, a children's book.
Barr wrote several articles that were published in the Israeli media. His current pictures are inspired by the deep space photos, sent to earth by the Hubble telescope, on big canvases 150x150 or 120x120 cm. He mixes unique combination of tar, acrylic, oil and lacquer colors in order to capture the dark and glimmering essence of the deepest space and the most glimmering galaxies, stars, white dwarfs and red giants.
The technique used by Barr is multi-layered mix of dark cold tar and bright acrylic colors, covered with oil and lacquers that gives the impression of imaginative, unique individual world. It is impossible to compare barr works to any known painter. Barr developed, especially in his latest tar based pictures, a private language with multiple esoteric meaning. His other series of works is Human Forming inspired by embryos photography by Lennart Nilsson and Emerging from the White on wide canvases, 200x150 cm. Barr's main interest is the combination and resemblance of those two worlds: the smallest - embryos, and the largest - galaxies, that stem from the white canvas rather than the dark tar. Barr's latest body of work is The Rainbow Project - 14 canvases 180x40 cm in rainbow colors.
From May 2009 barr started teaching his unique painting technique in workshops in Guadalajara and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.
Ted barr does not sign his paintings by name but by an esoteric symbol he named De - Dual Eternity - which resembles the cycle theory he wrote about in several articles and presentations. The basic notion behind this symbol that is created by 35 white dots is that life has no beginning nor end and the real human essence is the eternal spirit.
